A Captivating Summer Evening: "Another Country" Takes The Stage

Experience Julian Mitchell's Award-winning Play In A Unique Outdoor Setting With Ten Talented Cypriot Actors

Julian Mitchell's play "Another Country" was awarded Play of the Year at the Society of West End Theatre Awards in 1982. This play has seen the debut of great actors such as Kenneth Branagh, Rupert Everett, Daniel Day Lewis, and Colin Firth.

In a translation and direction by Andreas Araouzos, ten Cypriot actors will present to us in a theatrical reading the system and the camaraderie of boys at an English private school and boarding house of the 1930s. The "stage" will be the veranda of a classroom at The English School of Nicosia, and the audience will watch the reading in a cool courtyard in the evening, starting at sunset with a glass of Sacchetto Pinot Grigio white wine or a glass of San Pellegrino.

The play "Another Country" portrays the functioning of the system and the distinctions, oppression, and pretenses... concepts that have changed very little since 1930. The students Guy Bennett (a role based on the famous English spy Guy Burgess) and Tommy Judd become friends because both are "outsiders" – outside the system: the first because he is homosexual and the second because he is a Marxist. The school and the system have traditional ways of dealing with revolutionaries. Responsibilities, guilt, self-interest, and exemplary punishment emerge. How will the victims take care of themselves, how will the idealists betray their principles, how will friends and supporters walk away from the side of the wronged...
