This is the story of an intergalactic refugee who, on our planet, becomes the mightiest of the mighty.
The birth of the DC Universe combines with the second reboot of Superman films and is unrelated to the DC Extended Universe. It kicks off Chapter 1 (titled Gods and Monsters) of the new DC movie universe, which will continue with Supergirl (2026).
The Man of Steel (2013), starring Henry Cavill, was originally planned to have its own sequel within the DC Extended Universe. However, production delays around Justice League (2017) stalled those plans — even though Matthew Vaughn and Christopher McQuarrie were at various times linked to direct.
Meanwhile, James Gunn began planning a new Superman movie as early as May 2022 (this was around the time Henry Cavill’s cameo appeared in Black Adam, pushed by Dwayne Johnson to build a crossover film with both heroes). By August 2022, Gunn and Peter Safran had been appointed to lead DC Studios and immediately began developing the brand-new DC Universe. Soon after, it was announced that Superman: Legacy would serve as its opening film, with Gunn confirmed as director by March 2023. That same month, David Corenswet was hired for the title role (Gunn noticed him thanks to his appearance in Pearl), while Rachel Brosnahan was cast as Lois Lane. When filming began, the “Legacy” subtitle was dropped.
A major inspiration for the script was the 12-issue comic series All-Star Superman (2005–2008), whose Amazon sales skyrocketed as soon as this was revealed. The film also draws inspiration from the classic Fleischer Studios cartoons (1941–1943), the animated series Superman: The Animated Series (1996–2000), and comics such as Superman: Birthright (2003–04), Superman: Ending Battle (2002), Superman for All Seasons (1998), Kingdom Come (1996), and Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? (1986).
Notably, the film’s US release date (July 11, 2025) coincides with the birthday of James Gunn’s late father. According to Gunn, his emotional connection to his father inspired him to take on both the writing and directing of the movie. He has also emphasized that, unlike his previous works, this film will not carry a comedic tone. It will feature the live-action debut of Krypto, known to modern audiences mainly from the animated film DC League of Super-Pets.
Besides Corenswet, final contenders for the role of Superman included Jacob Elordi, Tom Brittney, and Andrew Richardson (with Elordi declining to participate in final auditions). Patrick Schwarzenegger, Pierson Fode, and Jack Quaid (all connected to superhero properties on TV) also submitted audition tapes.
For the role of Lois Lane, Emma Mackey, Samara Weaving, and Phoebe Dynevor were considered alongside Brosnahan, who ultimately secured the part.
Nicholas Hoult was a frontrunner for Lex Luthor, though he had preferred to play Superman. Gunn, however, wanted a well-known name for Lex Luthor, reportedly speaking with Bradley Cooper and others, including Black actors. For Superman, he wanted a fresher, younger face who could believably be around 25 years old. Alexander and Bill Skarsgård were also considered for Lex.
In September 2023, it was reported that Jason Momoa (Aquaman in the DCEU) would portray Lobo, either in this movie or in a solo project within the new universe. Later it was clarified that his role would debut in Supergirl (2026).
Filming began on February 29, 2024 — the canonical birthday of Superman according to the comics. Production kicked off in Norway’s frozen landscapes, before moving to Cleveland and Georgia in the United States. The entire film was shot in IMAX format using Red Digital Cinema cameras.
Krypto is played by canine actress Jolene, although the character appears mostly via digital effects.
The teaser trailer was viewed by over 250 million people worldwide within the first 24 hours, setting a new record for both DC Comics and Warner Bros.
