The Theatrical Phenomenon "Another Thebes" Comes to Cyprus

A Contemporary Study of Male Identity by Sergio Blanco

The most successful Greek theater production of recent years, the “phenomenon” performance that attracted 200,000 spectators across Greece, is coming to Cyprus as part of the Nicosia International Festival 2025. Directed by Vangelis Theodoropoulos (Neos Kosmos Theatre) and performed by Dimitris Kapouranis and Thanos Lekkas, the play delves into male identity, oppression, violence and crime, punishment and discrimination, sexuality, education, opportunities, and dreams.

Initially scheduled for two shows, the performance will now include a third due to overwhelming demand at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre:

  • Tuesday, September 30, 2025 (20:30)

  • Wednesday, October 1, 2025 (17:30 and 20:30)

The play is written by Franco-Uruguayan playwright Sergio Blanco, one of the most powerful contemporary voices in Spanish-language theater. Through his text, he examines male identity, oppression, violence, and crime, while also reflecting on the creative processes of theater itself. With references to the myth of Oedipus and Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, Blanco creates a profound exploration of truth, trauma, and human psychology.

The story follows a writer who visits 21-year-old Martin in prison, convicted of murdering his father, with the intention of writing a play based on his case. When Martin’s participation is rejected by the Ministry, the writer casts an actor—Federico—to play his role. The relationships between the three men evolve as the work becomes an unflinching dive into trauma, guilt, and the inner world of the characters.
