Voices from Chernobyl Brings Haunting Testimonies to the Stage in Nicosia
Theatro Dentro hosts a powerful adaptation of Svetlana Alexievich’s Nobel-winning work this April, directed by Maria Kyriakou
"We were all sitting in the black ash, breathing, admiring… we had never imagined that death could look so beautiful!"
This chilling quote, taken from the testimony of a Chernobyl survivor, captures the essence of the play Voices from Chernobyl, directed by Maria Kyriakou, premiering this April at Theatro Dentro in Nicosia.
Based on the Nobel Prize-winning book by Svetlana Alexievich, the production gives voice to those who experienced the Chernobyl disaster firsthand. Through evocative monologues, the stories of soldiers, children, women, and the elderly unfold—each bearing witness to the human cost of the nuclear tragedy.
Maria Kyriakou, who is responsible for the translation, dramaturgy, and direction, shapes a performance that explores human endurance, faith, love, and the search for meaning in a world that at times seems to have lost it entirely.
