Sonny Hayes, a former Formula 1 driver from the 1990s, was forced to retire after a horrific crash. Years later, a businessman and close friend convinces him to return—not to race, but to mentor a gifted young driver, Joshua Pearce.

In December 2021, a fierce bidding war erupted among major studios for the rights to an untitled film starring Brad Pitt and the creative trio behind Top Gun: Maverick: director Joseph Kosinski, screenwriter Ehren Kruger, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Apple emerged as the winner, offering $130 million and outbidding Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, Walt Disney Pictures, Netflix, and Amazon MGM Studios. Warner Bros. Pictures later acquired theatrical distribution rights from Apple.

Before filming began, Brad Pitt and Damson Idris trained by driving F2 and F3 cars at the Paul Ricard circuit in France. Pitt is also set to drive an F2 car during the 2023 British Grand Prix, which served as one of the movie’s first shooting locations. The custom race car he drives was designed by Mercedes-AMG F1 in collaboration with Carlin Motorsport.

Filming also took place at circuits in Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands, Milan, Japan, Mexico, Las Vegas, Abu Dhabi, and Daytona. Although ESPN initially reported the film’s title as Apex, this was later denied.

Script assistance was provided by Jez Butterworth, Kara Smith, Aaron Sorkin, and Christopher Storer—though none of them are officially credited.

Notably, real F1 drivers from the 2023 season make cameo appearances as themselves, including Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz Jr., Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and George Russell.

The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) supported the film’s production extensively, and F1 legend Lewis Hamilton is also listed as one of the producers.

Brad Pitt reportedly received $30 million for his role—the highest salary of his career to date.

While Bruckheimer and Kosinski denied reports of the film’s budget reaching $300 million, recent sources suggest that the actual figure is not far off.
