Which Municipality in Cyprus Has Changed Its Name?
New Name Reflects the Region’s Rich Legacy
The Municipality of East Paphos has officially been renamed Ierokipia Municipality, as confirmed by Mayor Nikos Palios.
According to Mr. Palios, the municipality's name change became official following a decree published in the Republic’s Official Gazette. The mayor added that he was also informed of this decision by a letter from the Director General of the Ministry of the Interior.
Mr. Palios explained that the new name was chosen to reflect the municipality’s rich heritage. The decision to rename the municipality was taken in a special council session on August 1st, during which the Municipal Council of East Paphos agreed to change its name in accordance with Article 8 of the Municipalities Law.
The council’s decision was subsequently forwarded to the Minister of the Interior, and the renaming was formalized by the Council of Ministers' decree, which appeared in the Official Gazette.
According to the municipality's announcement, the name change marks "the first step towards highlighting the region’s cultural heritage, especially the legacy of Cyprus’s Aphrodite and her Sacred Gardens."
Mayor Palios emphasized that the new name will promote the area’s unique local advantages, strengthen the municipality’s efforts to advocate for community initiatives, and facilitate achieving its future goals.
