Zivania, The Spirit of Tradition - Celebrating Its Protected Geographical Indication Status

Upholding Tradition and Quality in Cyprus's Celebrated Spirit

Zivania, Cyprus's iconic spirit, has been recognized as a product with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). This distinction mandates adherence to specific guidelines for Zivania's production and labeling as outlined in relevant regulations.

During the Agricultural and Natural Resources Parliamentary Committee session on January 16, 2024, the adherence to PGI standards in Zivania production was a key discussion point. This followed concerns over certain alcoholic products labeled as “Zivania” being sold despite not meeting PGI criteria, an act deemed illegal.

The production guidelines specify that Zivania must be made using grape marc from traditional Cypriot grape varieties. However, grape marc from non-traditional Cypriot varieties is permissible if it's from a variety listed in the national vine variety classification, as per the Department of Agriculture's 2014 decree (Regulatory Administrative Act 535/2014). The specific variety used must be declared on the main label.

Notably, the majority of Zivania available in Cyprus's markets lacks the PGI label. While using the PGI label is not mandatory for wines, its use is encouraged to inform consumers and stakeholders and to emphasize the product's connection to its specific geographic origin.
