Cyprus Public Transport unveiled its latest addition to the existing fleet in a press conference on Tuesday: the first batch of electric urban buses. These eco-friendly vehicles are set to commence operation within the next few days, offering sustainable and greener public transportation options to citizens, as well as alternative modes of travel.

The impressive lineup consists of five Yutong electric buses, each measuring 12 meters in length. Designed with accessibility in mind, these buses boast a maximum capacity of 80 passengers, including priority seating and dedicated wheelchair areas.

One notable advantage of these electric buses is their ability to operate from morning to evening on a single daily charge. Equipped with modern amenities such as air conditioning, 5G WiFi, closed-circuit surveillance cameras, and USB chargers, these buses ensure a comfortable and connected journey for passengers. Furthermore, their electric engines operate silently, providing a smooth and vibration-free ride.

The introduction of these electric buses aligns with the Ministry of Transport and Communications' vision of delivering sustainable and environmentally friendly public transportation solutions to the population. By reducing atmospheric pollution and noise pollution on the roads, these electric buses not only contribute to a healthier environment but also enhance the overall quality of life for citizens.

During the press conference, Minister Alexis Vafeades emphasized the importance of this initiative, highlighting the positive impact it will have on mitigating traffic congestion and improving the daily commute, particularly in the capital city of Nicosia. The collaboration between Cyprus Public Transport and the Ministry aims to find feasible and effective solutions that address these challenges.

Looking ahead, Cyprus Public Transport and the Ministry are exploring an ambitious project called "Mass Rapid Transit." This future endeavor, supported by robust infrastructure and an ample fleet of vehicles, aims to efficiently transport a significant number of passengers from the GSP Stadium to the city center. By providing frequent, direct, and comfortable transportation options, this initiative seeks to alleviate traffic congestion while boosting the demand for public transportation.

In addition to the electric buses, the Minister announced the launch of a pilot program for Demand-Responsive Transport (DRT). Initially targeting individuals with disabilities who already rely on public transportation, this innovative service allows passengers to request door-to-door bus transportation from their residence to their desired destination and vice versa. This program demonstrates the commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in public transportation services.
