Resilience and Climate Change Adaptation Grants for Cyprus Communities Approved
The European Union has given the green light to a comprehensive grant plan designed to bolster community resilience and foster adaptation to climate change in Cyprus. The initiative, a part of the broader EU Recovery and Resilience Plan, was recently approved by the Cabinet, according to Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis.
In an official statement following the session, presided over by the President of the Republic, Mr. Letymbiotis emphasized the significance of the plan's approval. He highlighted that its core purpose is to promote vital investments from Community Councils by providing them with financial incentives in the form of non-repayable support. These funds will be aimed at mitigating and alleviating the adverse effects of climate change, particularly focusing on challenges posed by rising temperatures and frequent flooding incidents. Moreover, the plan is set to include investments in sustainable mobility solutions.
The budget allocated for this ambitious project stands at an impressive 3 million euros, underlining the EU's commitment to helping Cyprus tackle the pressing issues arising from climate change. The plan itself aligns with the overarching EU Recovery and Resilience Plan, strategically devised to maximize the impact of the funds provided to Cyprus through the European Recovery and Resilience Facility. The proposal was meticulously prepared and subsequently submitted to the EU, where it gained approval from the Cabinet on May 14, 2021.
Notably, the grant plan will exclusively target Community Councils across Cyprus. Each Council will have the opportunity to apply for funding, empowering them to take proactive steps towards enhancing their resilience and adaptability to the changing climate.
