Government Employment Up by 5%
Reaching 53,554
In comparison to the same period in 2022, total government employment in Cyprus increased by 283 persons (0.5%), reaching 53,554.
The Statistical Service of Cyprus reports a decrease in permanent staff by 702 persons (-2.7%), from 25,555 to 24,853. In contrast, casual staff saw a significant increase of 2,557 persons (13.3%), totaling 21,837, up from 19,280 in October 2022. This rise is largely due to the growth in the Educational Service’s casual staff, following the cessation of the services purchase regime in the Ministry of Education, Sport, and Youth's supporting programs from the 2023-2024 school year.
All permanent personnel categories experienced a decrease, while casual personnel categories saw increases. The most notable change was a 24.2% increase in casual Educational Service staff. Hourly Paid Workers decreased by 18.6%, primarily due to their transfer from the Ministry of Health to the State Health Services Organisation, part of the Broad Public Sector, starting January 2023.
When compared to September 2023, the most significant employment change was a 23.0% increase in casual Educational Service staff. Employment levels in other personnel categories remained relatively stable from September to October 2023.
