EU Unveils Roadmap for Greener, Digital Transition in Agri-Food Sector

New Strategy Aims to Enhance Sustainability and Competitiveness in the Food Processing Industry

The European Commission has released a roadmap for transitioning the agri-food sector to greener and digital policies, with a special emphasis on the food processing industry. This roadmap, developed after consultations with member states, associations, and related NGOs, identifies challenges and opportunities specifically for food production and sales systems and proposes specific actions.

The roadmap, as mentioned in the announcement, aims to balance profitability across the value chain, invest in sustainability to curb food inflation, support the international appeal of EU agri-food exports, and implement circular business models. It urges industrial entities to adopt the EU Code of Conduct for responsible business and marketing practices in food trade. Additionally, it suggests actions to achieve sustainability goals, enhance cooperation among various business support organizations, and increase awareness about opportunities for research and innovation funding, particularly regarding sustainability.

Moreover, the document released today outlines EU policies and programs that can be utilized to support the transition to a green, digital, and resilient industrial ecosystem in the EU's agri-food sector. National and regional authorities are also called upon to mobilize similar policies.
