Cyprus Initiates Green Kiosks Project for Sustainable Recycling in Remote Areas

Contract Signed for 50 Prefabricated Green Kiosks to Enhance Recycling in Mountainous and Remote Regions

Yesterday marked the signing of a contract for the procurement and installation of 50 prefabricated green kiosks for separate recycling in mountainous and remote areas across all provinces of Cyprus.

As announced by the Department of Environment, the contract was signed by the Department and the project contractor, in the presence of the General Directorate of Development, signifying a milestone in Cyprus' 2021-2026 Recovery and Resilience Plan.

"The contract will last for 25 months and is valued at €3.274.000, excluding VAT," it is mentioned.

The Green Kiosks will be installed in 50 remote and mountainous local authorities across all Cypriot provinces. Specifically, this includes eight communities in the Nicosia Province, 16 in the Paphos Province, 14 in the Limassol Province, ten communities and one municipality in the Larnaca Province, and one community in the Famagusta Province. The installation of the Green Kiosks is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026.

Recording the Quality and Quantity of Incoming Materials

The Green Kiosk is a small Recycling Sorting Center, appropriately fitted inside a modified small shipping container, which receives separated recyclable materials from citizens.

It is added that the goal of the Green Kiosk is to record the quality and quantity of incoming materials, as well as to achieve detailed separation and recovery of high-purity and value materials. It also features a human-centric character due to the physical presence of an operator.

According to the announcement, the Green Kiosk will accept paper/cardboard, plastic, glass, metal, and special flows. Additionally, materials that can be easily reused without any processing can be allocated to the Green Kiosk, such as clothing and footwear, toys, CDs, and books. Regarding special flows, these consist of edible fats and oils (cooking oil), lamps, small electrical and electronic devices, as well as household batteries – accumulators.

The Green Kiosks are part of the LIFE IP CYzero WASTE- LIFE20/IPE/CY/000011 project, "Smart Monitoring and Effective Reduction of Waste in Cyprus." The design of the Green Kiosk is an original unit of the National Technical University of Athens, a partner in the project, and has been successfully implemented in remote areas and islands in Greece.
