Chief Scientist Highlights Cyprus’ Role as an Emerging Tech Hub in Japan
Skourides Highlighted Collaboration Opportunities in Robotics, Energy, Artificial Intelligence, Shipping, Space, and Biotechnology
Cyprus is presenting attractive incentives to foreign investors interested in sectors of research, innovation, and technology. Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation, and Technology Demetris Skourides discussed these opportunities during a business forum in Japan, under the auspices of the Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry, George Papanastasiou.
Skourides highlighted collaboration opportunities in robotics, energy, artificial intelligence, shipping, space, and biotechnology. He emphasized Cyprus' significant role as an international business center within the EU. The visit to Tokyo included a business forum organized by the Ministry of Energy, the CCCI, the Cyprus-Japan Business Association, and the Commercial Center in Japan, drawing interest from foreign investors and members of the Japanese business community.
Minister Papanastasiou discussed Cyprus' strategy to attract international businesses and specialized personnel, as well as the operation of the Business Facilitation Unit, the "Contact Point" for companies wanting to operate or expand in Cyprus. He underscored the excellent prospects available in Cyprus, particularly in specific sectors relevant to Japan.
In a presentation titled "Cyprus as an Emerging Technology Center," Skourides delved into the long-term strategy "Cyprus 2035," aiming to make Cyprus one of the most favorable countries for living, working, and investing. He also touched on Cyprus' upward trajectory in technology and the emerging ecosystem in research and innovation, including government strategies and goals for digital transition.
He discussed the digitalization strategy of the state, focusing on the Digital Citizen initiative, and addressed next-step plans considering key challenges like big data and AI, concluding with the role and importance of cybersecurity in transforming Cyprus into an information gateway and regional hub.
Furthermore, he highlighted the significant role of seven Centers of Excellence operating in Cyprus. The presentation was followed by a thematic panel where Skourides moderated a discussion with Cypriot technology companies.
He also held significant meetings to discuss more extensively the actions Cyprus takes to attract startups. In a conversation with Peter Fatelning, Ministerial Advisor for Science, Innovation, Digital Technologies, and other EU policies, pivotal issues such as the EU Data Act initiative were discussed.
Finally, the announcement noted the importance of meetings with executives from companies like REIMEI, ARTEVITE, JAOPS, Kinsui, MANSEISYA, Wargaming, World Wide Media, and a representative of the EU-Japan Centre.
