High-Speed Internet in Cyprus Surges as 81.5% of Connections Now Reach 100Mbps or More

Fiber Optic Usage Hits 63.4% as Mobile and Fixed Broadband Data Volumes Continue to Grow in 2024

Four out of five internet connections in Cyprus—81.5%—now deliver speeds of 100Mbps or higher, according to the latest statistics released by the Office of the Commissioner for Electronic Communications and Postal Regulation (GERHET), based on data through December 2024. Of these, 63.4% are fiber optic connections.

Fixed broadband access saw a modest 1.79% annual increase, adding 6,391 new subscribers compared to 2023. However, the more notable trend was a 4.9% growth in high-speed connections (≥100Mbps) during the second half of 2024. This is largely attributed to high-capacity network expansion and free speed upgrades.

Connections exceeding 1Gbps recorded the largest semiannual growth to date—1.4%—reaching 4.7% of total subscriptions.

The market share of xDSL connections declined by 10.3%, now at 17%, while fiber optic (FTTH/B) connections rose by 12%, reaching 63.4%. DOCSIS 3.0/3.1 connections also fell slightly to 19.6%, with xDSL subscriptions dropping below DOCSIS for the first time.

In terms of usage, the average data volume per fixed line reached 1.10TB in Q4 2024, continuing an upward trend. Total fixed data volume for 2024 increased by 15.4% year-over-year.

Fixed telephony saw a decline of 24,454 connections, with fiber optics now supporting 76.8% of the remaining fixed lines.

In the mobile sector, 76,194 new users were added in 2024. Contract-based subscriptions rose by 2.2%, with plans offering unlimited data, voice, and SMS now making up 59.56% of all contracts.

The mobile user-to-population ratio in the Republic of Cyprus rose by 8.3%, reaching 163.5%. This growth was driven by contract subscriptions, as prepaid users dropped by 10,982.

Mobile data consumption surged, with a 42.6% increase in 2024 compared to the previous year.

The total volume of data traffic—including both fixed and mobile—rose by 278,188 TB (18.5%) compared to 2023.

Despite this growth, the share of data transferred via fixed broadband continued to decrease, falling to 85.31% in Q4 2024. This is due to the increasing popularity of mobile contracts with unlimited data, a trend expected to persist.
