AI Camera to Detect Seatbelt and Mobile Phone Violations

Acusensus’ AI Technology Aims to Improve Road Safety by Identifying Drivers Not Wearing Seatbelts or Using Mobile Phones

The Australian company Acusensus has developed an artificial intelligence camera for use on road networks, capable of zooming in to detect whether a driver is wearing a seatbelt or talking on a mobile phone.

The camera, mounted on a trailer, will be piloted at various points on Britain's national highways. Initially, the system will not operate fully autonomously. Images flagged by the camera as showing a driver without a seatbelt or using a mobile phone will be reviewed by staff from the UK's national road management services to confirm the violation. Depending on the system's performance and accuracy in identifying offenders, the process may become automated, eliminating the need for human review in issuing fines.

According to British authorities, the images captured by the camera will be archived for three months. The camera tests have begun on the road networks in Devon and Cornwall. Within three days, the system identified 300 drivers not wearing seatbelts or using mobile phones. The fine for using a mobile phone while driving in the UK is £230, and for not wearing a seatbelt, it is £120.
