A new Research Center of Excellence is being established in Cyprus, positioning the island as a hub for quantum computing and technology.

The University of Cyprus's proposal "Quantum Computing for Science and Technology (QSciTec)" has been selected for funding by the European Commission under the "Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation – Teaming" program.

The QSciTec Center will conduct interdisciplinary research focused on quantum computing, materials, and optimization of basic and applied research areas. A key component is the creation of a "Quantum Computing Innovation Hub," offering research and innovation services to researchers and organizations.

Funding includes €15 million from the EU, matching national funds, and €5 million from the University of Cyprus. This will create a critical mass of highly trained researchers and infrastructure for pioneering research in quantum technologies, attracting further research funding for long-term sustainability.

Professor Constantia Alexandrou, the coordinator of QSciTec, highlighted that this development will create a research and innovation ecosystem in emerging quantum technologies in Cyprus, connecting universities, tech companies, end-users, government agencies, and entrepreneurship promotion firms. This network will generate new employment opportunities and economic growth.

The Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Tasos Christofides, emphasized the success of QSciTec, reflecting the high level of research at the university and its mission to bring science and technology closer to society.

In the coming years, QSciTec is expected to employ a significant number of new researchers, create modern infrastructure, and foster new research activities and collaborations. This will be the fourth center of excellence coordinated by the University of Cyprus, with the university being a partner in a fifth.
