Former OpenAI Chief Scientist Founds New AI Company Focused on User Safety

Ilia Sutskever Launches Safe Superintelligence After Leaving OpenAI

Ilia Sutskever, a founding member and chief scientist of OpenAI, revolutionized artificial intelligence with the generative AI program ChatGPT. Sutskever, a board member of OpenAI, became widely known when he and other board members unexpectedly decided to remove CEO and co-founder Sam Altman.

Despite Altman's successful leadership, which brought fame and billions in investments, mainly from Microsoft, Sutskever and others accused him of making decisions that went against the company's agreed-upon policies and strategies, often withholding information or lying during board discussions.

The main charge against Altman was that he prioritized the commercial aspects of AI development over user safety, contrary to the company's founding principles.

Altman's removal triggered a domino effect of reactions within the company and caused ripples in the broader tech and AI industry. He ultimately agreed to join Microsoft to lead a new AI division, while Microsoft, through its investments, had acquired 49% of OpenAI's shares. After intense behind-the-scenes maneuvering, the board members who had ousted Altman resigned, and he triumphantly returned as the company's head, with analysts suggesting that Microsoft effectively took over OpenAI's management.

Sutskever ultimately left OpenAI a few weeks ago and announced the founding of a new startup, Safe Superintelligence.

"I am starting a new company. We will pursue safe superintelligence with a singular focus, a singular goal, and a singular product," Sutskever stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Joining him in this endeavor are former OpenAI executive Daniel Levy and Daniel Gross, who oversaw AI technology development at Apple.

The new company, based in Palo Alto, California, and Tel Aviv, aims to develop an AI program designed from the ground up to meet all privacy protection and personal data security requirements, addressing all potential user risks.
