Preparations in Full Swing for EuroBasket 2025 in Cyprus

Cyprus to Host Major Basketball Event with Stadium Upgrades and Sponsorships in Place

The engines of all involved parties are now running at full throttle for the organization of the EuroBasket 2025 group stage, the largest sporting event ever held in Cyprus. The games will take place from August 28 to September 5, 2025. The Organizing Committee, Cyprus Basketball Federation, Cyprus Sports Organization, and relevant state services are coordinating and proceeding with all necessary processes.

A significant development is that the Public Works Department, after reviewing the sole bid submitted for the upgrade of the Spyros Kyprianou Stadium in Limassol, has decided to award the contract to "A & A Apostolides Contracting Company Ltd," whose bid amounted to €14,496,732. The initial estimated cost of the project was €12,200,000.

The company has already been informed that they are undertaking the project, and currently, the relevant contracts are being prepared, with all necessary procedures underway to sign the contracts and begin the works.

The aim is to start the works by the end of August. The estimated completion time for the project is 11 months from the start date. There is optimism that everything will proceed smoothly, ensuring the project is delivered on time and everything is ready for the grand basketball event.

Project Details

The project involves the study, construction, and a two-year defect and maintenance period for the upgrade of the existing sports facilities at "Spyros Kyprianou" in Limassol, in preparation for the EuroBasket 2025 group stage games.

The upgrade of the Spyros Kyprianou Athletic Center will be substantial as the stadium must meet all FIBA's stringent specifications for this major event.

Increased Capacity

The stadium's capacity will increase to at least 7,700 seats from the current 5,517. There is the possibility to add mobile seating, which will be done, bringing the capacity to over 8,000 seats.

Contractor Obligations

Among other obligations, the contractor must:

  • Replace the existing parquet floor with a new one that meets FIBA specifications.

  • Supply three (3) and install two (2) suitable basketball mechanisms.

  • Install two (2) electronic scoreboards and shot clocks.

  • Provide and install two large electronic screens.

  • Prepare the infrastructure for the employer to supply and install LED perimeter boards around the court.

  • Reconfigure the underground parking area for teams and VIPs (no staff parking spaces required).

  • Make adjustments to facilitate the park and ride system as part of sustainable mobility efforts.

  • Create new public sanitary facilities to comply with the legislation for the number of spectator seats.

  • Replace synthetic floors in circulation corridors with high-quality equivalents.

  • Provide the necessary furniture and implement the seating arrangement on the court according to the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 manual.

Allianz Cyprus Sponsorship

Allianz Cyprus, a branch of Allianz, the world's largest insurance company, is officially the first sponsor of FIBA EuroBasket 2025, which will take place next summer in Cyprus, as announced by the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Organizing Committee on Thursday. Cyprus will co-host the event along with three other countries: Finland, Poland, and Latvia, with Latvia hosting the knockout stage games after the group phase.

Specifically, the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Organizing Committee in Cyprus announced that Allianz Cyprus, as the Main Event Sponsor, takes the top tier among the two sponsorship levels for the upcoming European Championship.

The Organizing Committee has designated only eight available sponsorship slots in the two-tier program, with four companies supporting the national effort as Main Event Sponsors and another four as Event Sponsors.

Information About the Games

The group stage in Cyprus will feature six teams, including Cyprus, and, barring any major surprises, Greece, which is expected to secure its qualification in the preliminaries. The remaining four national teams that will compete in Cyprus will be announced in March 2025, following the draw for the four groups. There will be 15 games held at Spyros Kyprianou.

The first tip-off in Cyprus will take place on August 28, with the remaining four game days scheduled for August 30 and 31, and September 2 and 4, 2025.
