United by Pride 2024: A Powerful Call for Unity, Peace, and Reconciliation

The Intercommunal Event With Two Parallel Marches That Meet, in A Powerful Call for Peace, Reunification, and the Protection of LGBTQIA+ Rights

On Saturday, September 14th, 2024, "United by Pride" will commence with two parallel pride marches starting at 18:00. One march will begin at Eleftheria Square in South Nicosia, and the other at Kuğulu Park in North Nicosia. Both marches will converge at the UN Buffer Zone at 19:00, symbolizing unity in diversity. The evening will continue with DJ sets and live performances until 23:00, showcasing local and Cypriot artists and performers.

This year’s “United by Pride” event is more than just a celebration of diversity; it is a significant act of unity and defiance against growing challenges both locally and in our region. The event highlights the urgent need for cooperation, solidarity and action, especially within the current political landscape of Cyprus, where ongoing division continues to impede progress toward a peaceful and inclusive society.

Initiated by Queer Collective CY “United by Pride” is now in its 3rd edition and it brings together Accept LGBTI Cyprus, African LGBTIQ+ Community Cyprus, LGBT Filipinas, and Queer Cyprus Association.  Despite differing perspectives, approaches and politics these organizations have united with a shared commitment to make this year’s United by Pride a powerful call for peace, reunification, and the protection of LGBTQIA+ rights. "United By Pride" is more than a local celebration; it is a statement against discrimination and division, emphasizing that peace, reunification, and LGBTQIA+ rights are non-negotiable values.

About United by Pride:

“United By Pride” is an independent, intercommunal Pride event in Cyprus, dedicated to fostering unity, peace, and inclusivity. Now in its third year, this self-funded, community-driven event brings together LGBTQIA+ individuals from diverse communities and minorities across Cyprus, celebrating the island’s multicommunal and multicultural fabric.

As the first Pride event held within a UN-controlled territory and ceasefire zone, “United By Pride” symbolises a commitment to reunification and the shared pursuit of a peaceful future for Cyprus. It stands against all forms of discrimination, including racism, sexism, heterosexism, fascism, and nationalism, while providing a platform for local queer talent to shine, reflecting the rich diversity of the island’s LGBTQIA+ community.
