Cyprus Shipping Chamber on Shipping Challenges

Security Concerns in the Red Sea and Emissions Reduction at the Center of ICS Discussions.

The attacks on ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, along with developments related to the goal of reducing emissions, were at the center of yesterday's discussions of the Board of Directors of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) in London, during which the leadership of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) represented the Cypriot shipping industry.

According to a statement from CSC, Cyprus was represented by the Chamber’s President, Themis Papadopoulos, who also holds the position of Vice-President of the International Chamber of Shipping, along with the Director General, Thomas Kazakos.

The discussions focused on the serious issue of security in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden due to attacks on ships and sailors by Houthi rebels, and the developments ahead of the upcoming round of negotiations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regarding the new regulatory package aimed at further reducing greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping.

Additionally, the statement adds, there was discussion on the next steps for the International Chamber of Shipping, with the aim of strengthening and promoting the development of global shipping.
