What Do Carobs and Limassol’s Art Scene Have in Common?

What Do Carobs and Limassol’s Art Scene Have in Common?

Carobs were a big deal in Cyprus back in the day. These sweet, cocoa-like pods were a beloved food source and a major export commodity, fueling the island's economy and becoming a symbol of its history. Giant warehouses dotted the coast of Limassol, shipping them abroad.

Fast-forward to today, and one of these warehouses has been reborn as the epicenter of Limassol’s art scene: The PSI Foundation.

Carob to culture

This beautifully repurposed warehouse was built in 1961 right on the seafront, with its facade resembling an inverted Ψ, the Greek letter for “Psi”– hence the name. Inside, the gigantic space, once filled with carob pods and chocolatey aromas, now pulsates with contemporary art installations from famous artists.

PSI is unlike any other cultural space or art gallery. Through thought-provoking exhibitions and engaging programs, this space is where multiple art forms and artists come together to give you a captivating experience.

Imagine soaring, curved ceilings, exposed brick walls, and cutting-edge installations – very Instagrammable. Now imagine sharing a different experience with your friends, other than having a coffee or a catchup, using the Mediterranean Sea as your backdrop.

X marks the spot, Ψ marks the art

What’s on now? The current exhibition, “Casts of an Island 2024”, curated by Nicos Chr. Pattichis, features a lineup of talented Cypriot artists who push the boundaries of the art scene, not only on our small island but the entire world. From sculptures to interactive installations, their work explores themes such as identity, belonging, and the power of art to heal and transform.

What’s even more exciting is that PSI is more than just an exhibiting gallery. It’s a community hub where you can attend tours, connect with like-minded people, and discover new forms of expression. And it’s not just for art geeks – it’s for everyone looking for a different experience and a good dose of inspiration.

It’s family-friendly too

From October, as part of the exhibition Casts of an Island, families and kids can explore the exhibits through a more playful an interactive lens. Exploring the Island is designed for families and children aged between 5 and 12, urging them to navigate the exhibition, read maps, and follow instructions to solve puzzles and learn about the exhibits independently. Through each artists’ work, they can learn more about art and understand the different sections of the exhibitions.
