AR: How Snap's Spectacles Aim to Connect Users to the Digital World With Ease (Vid)
The Future of Augmented Reality Wearables
In recent years, various types of glasses have emerged, attempting to connect their users to the modern digital world by displaying images and information directly in front of their eyes, often syncing with smartphones and the Internet. The goal is for users to access the information they need (e.g., incoming messages, maps, etc.) without having to hold a device, allowing them to engage with this information while walking or even driving, without losing awareness of their surroundings.
Companies in this field have started developing glasses that integrate augmented reality (AR) technology. California-based Snap has introduced its own version of AR glasses.
Snap has long been working on a series of virtual reality glasses called Spectacles. The company has released four models so far, with each new version featuring improved technology, and the latest models now include AR capabilities. Recently, Snap unveiled its fifth-generation Spectacles with AR.
The glasses come equipped with cameras, microphones, and speakers, while the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor ensures smooth performance without overheating. The glasses can be controlled through voice commands and hand gestures. In addition to displaying information, users can enjoy multimedia content (e.g., movies) projected as though on a large screen and can even play video games.
Initially, these glasses are available only to approved developers who are willing to commit to a subscription of $99/month. This access allows developers to start using the glasses, create new applications, or suggest improvements to the design and technology.
