Ocean of Threads: Fashion Meets Marine Art
A Creative Fusion of Sustainable Fashion and Art, Raising Awareness for Marine Conservation.
Larnaka, Cyprus – In an inspired convergence of art, marine environmental awareness, and community engagement, artist Michalis Pantelidis has collaborated with the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research and the Larnaka Tourism Board for the project “Ocean of Threads”. This innovative exhibition, featuring six unique artworks printed on aluminum, will be displayed on the vessel LEF1, which has been submerged as an artificial reef in the marine protected area of Voroklini, from September 18, 2024, until the end of the year.
“Ocean of Threads” extends beyond a typical art exhibition, making a bold statement about the power of creativity to foster a passion for ocean conservation. Utilizing recycled plastic bottles, the artist transforms these materials into sustainable fashion items such as scarves and dresses, adorned with a collage designed by Pantelidis from the underwater photographs by Alexandros Papandreou. These designs highlight the undersea beauty of Larnaka and emphasize the importance of marine ecosystems.
This collaboration seeks to increase public awareness of marine biodiversity and the urgent need to protect these vital natural resources. Each piece serves as a reminder of our interdependence with the marine environment and the significant role we can play in its preservation.
An exclusive event is scheduled for October 4, 2024, at the Radisson Beach Resort from 18:00 to 20:00. The event is open to the public, inviting guests to experience these works up close and discover the stories behind their creation. It is important to note that this event is not a commercial venture but an opportunity for information and further discussion about sustainable practices and ocean literacy.
The public and media are invited to join in celebrating this unique intersection of art, fashion, and environmental activism. The project aims to enhance a deeper connection with our seas and encourage actions that contribute to their ongoing protection.
