Green Week 2024: Sustainable Practices and Community Engagement in Cyprus
Four Municipalities Join Forces for a Week of Environmental Awareness and Green Transition Initiatives
With a focus on promoting sustainable practices, raising public awareness, and mobilizing local communities for the green transition, the "Green Week 2024" will take place from October 14 to October 20. The event is co-organized by four municipalities—Limassol, Polemidia, Kourion, Amathus—and the Limassol EOA, in collaboration with the "Green Energy" group.
The program of activities was unveiled during a press conference at the "Panos Solomonides" Cultural Center, attended by Kourion Mayor Pantelis Georgiou, Polemidia Mayor Andros Theodorou, Deputy General Director of Limassol EOA, Socrates Metaxas, and Kyriakos Kyriakou, President of the Cyprus Animal Party.
Both mayors, along with representatives from the other municipalities and the Deputy Director of the Limassol EOA, expressed their support for "Green Week," which is being held for the second consecutive year. The event will focus on the triad of "People – Environment – Animals," encouraging the public to embrace and participate in the planned activities.
Speaking on behalf of Green Energy Group, Charalambos Kyriakou explained that the "People" axis aims to "inspire citizens to engage in activities that promote respect for the environment and the adoption of green practices." The second axis focuses on the environment, promoting renewable energy sources and sustainable resource management practices such as recycling, reusing, and tree planting.
For the first time, Green Week will also focus on animals, recognizing their importance and raising awareness about their protection and care.
The events kick off on Monday, October 14 (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.), with a roundtable discussion titled "Local Government and Green Transition," at the "Panos Solomonides" Cultural Center.
On Tuesday, October 15 (4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.), Polemidia Municipality will sponsor a blood donation event at the Agios Georgios Havouzas Church, while on Wednesday, October 16 (5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.), Kourion Municipality will host a children's workshop titled "Green Creations with Recyclable Materials" at the Ypsonas Municipal Theater.
The activities continue in the Amathus Municipality at the Germasogeia Primary School on Thursday, October 17 (9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.). Students will attend an educational presentation by members of the Green Energy Group on recycling and renewable energy sources.
On Friday, October 18 (9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.), a tree planting event will take place on Kalebounari Hill in Polemidia Municipality, in collaboration with the Limassol EOA. This initiative builds on last year’s efforts, aiming to create a fire prevention zone in the area.
Saturday, October 19 (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.), will feature the "Green Woofs" event at the Germasogeia Dog Park in the Amathus Municipality, organized in collaboration with the Cyprus Animal Party. The event aims to raise awareness about pet care, socialization, and exercise.
Green Week will conclude on Sunday, October 20 (2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.), with a 7km cycling event starting from the My Mall Limassol parking lot. The event will include music, children's games, and information on the importance of cycling.
This final event also marks the conclusion of the "Ride to Green" campaign, an initiative by Green Energy Group and Nextbike Cyprus, under the auspices of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping. The campaign aims to raise public awareness and encourage participation in sustainable mobility and the green transition.
