Why Government Agencies Were on High Alert Yesterday

The Attack Appeared to Be Politically Motivated

Yesterday, government agencies were on high alert and were closely monitoring developments in relation to a possible cyber-attack in Cyprus. The warning came after Odyssey Cybersecurity identified a potential threat. Until now, no such attack has come to fruition.

According to Odyssey, the cyber-attack was scheduled for October 17, 2024, and would specifically target critical infrastructure in Cyprus. The targeted systems included key Cypriot infrastructure, particularly government, financial, and other critical services.

Odyssey Cybersecurity had observed that a hacking group known as LulzSec Black had publicly declared its intent to target Cyprus' critical infrastructure. The attack appeared to be politically motivated, with Cyprus' relationship with Israel cited as a factor behind the planned cyber offensive.

The risk was further heightened by the involvement of another group, “Moroccan Soldiers,” who had expressed their support for LulzSec Black in these operations.
