Costas Kadis Approved as EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans
European Parliament Committees Approve Kadis' Appointment After Lengthy Hearing
The European Parliament's Fisheries Committee (PECH), with the support of the Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety Committee (ENVI), has approved the appointment of Kostas Kadis as the EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, following a three-hour hearing in Brussels.
Members of the European Parliament from the European People's Party (EPP), the Socialists and Democrats (S&D), the Liberals (Renew), the Greens, and the far right Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) voted in favor of Kadis' appointment.
In contrast, members from the Left and other far-right groups, Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) and Patriots for Europe (PfE), opposed the approval.
The vote tally stood at 20 in favor and 6 against, surpassing the required two-thirds majority. The Environment Committee (ENVI) members also supported Kadis' appointment, although they did not have voting rights.
The hearings for the new Commissioners will continue today, Thursday, with four more candidates, and next Tuesday with hearings for six Vice Presidents of the new Commission.
