Market Shares in Courier Services: Cyprus Post Gains Ground

Small Parcel Deliveries Surge

A Statistical Bulletin on Postal Services (2014–2023), issued by the Office of the Commissioner of Communications, reveals a rise in small parcel deliveries since 2019. Despite a decline in revenue for universal postal services from €24 million in 2014 to €20.3 million in 2023, incoming small parcels under 2 kg increased significantly during this period.

The volume of incoming small parcels rose from 1.7 million in 2019 to 2.2 million in 2023. The pandemic saw a further spike, with parcels reaching 2.3 million in 2021, reflecting a sharp pivot toward e-commerce.

Market Adaptation and Share Shifts

The report also highlights the adaptation of Cyprus Post to evolving trends. Its market share in international courier services for incoming parcels grew from 5.1% in 2014 to 19.7% in 2023. However, multinational companies like DHL Cyprus maintained the largest market share, with 43.8% in 2014 and 40.4% in 2023. UPS, represented by GAP Vasilopoulos in 2023, held 12.4%, down from 19.1% in 2014 when represented by Airtrans Express Service.

In outbound courier services, Cyprus Post’s market share rose from 13.2% in 2014 to 15.6% in 2023. DHL Cyprus continued to lead, although its share dropped from 47.7% in 2014 to 38.7% in 2023. ACS Air Courier Services significantly increased its share, growing from 7.3% in 2014 to 15.1% in 2023.

In domestic courier services, GAP AKIS Express and ACS Air Courier Services dominated the market in 2023, with shares of 42.4% and 36.4%, respectively.
