Nicosia Begins Revitalization Works on Perimeter Moat Arc
Phase A of the Landmark Redevelopment Project to Last 20 Months
Construction for the "Revitalization of the Inner Perimeter Arc of the Moat - Phase A" project in Nicosia will commence on Wednesday, January 15. The project, part of the "THALEIA 2021-2027" Cohesion Policy Program and co-financed by the European Union, aims to enhance and modernize the city's infrastructure and aesthetics.
The section of Konstantinos Paleologos Avenue between Archbishop Makarios II Square (Kolokasi opening) and the entrance to the municipal parking lot at Constanza Bastion will remain closed for seven months during Phase A. Additionally, the southern end of Trikoupi Street will undergo construction during the first three months of the project, aligning with the completion of its redevelopment.
Simultaneously, other sections of Konstantinos Paleologos Avenue will undergo extensive works, including excavations for utility undergrounding and the reconstruction of roadways and sidewalks. Façade enhancements on private buildings along the western edge of the avenue, near Eleftheria Square, will also take place during this period.
To minimize disruption, alternative routes will be implemented for east-to-west traffic, utilizing Stasinos Avenue and Doros Loizou Bridge (formerly Kaningos Bridge). Access to key destinations such as the OXI municipal parking lot, the Constanza Bastion Market, the old city, and pedestrian zones will be maintained through the OXI roundabout and Xanthis Xenierou Street. Other diversions include routes through Xanthis Xenierou, Agiou Antoniou, Patriarchou Grigoriou, and Tyllirias Square.
The first phase of the "Revitalization of the Inner Perimeter Arc of the Moat" is expected to take approximately 20 months to complete. It encompasses significant improvements to Nicosia’s urban landscape, infrastructure, and accessibility, further cementing the city's historical and cultural significance.
