Xenia Loizidou Recognized by EU Mission for Work on Marine Pollution
EU Mission Highlights Loizidou’s Contributions to Ocean Cleanup on International Day of Women and Girls in Science
Cypriot coastal engineer Dr. Xenia Loizidou has been recognized by the EU Mission "Restore Our Ocean and Waters", which highlighted her work in preventing marine pollution. She is one of four female scientists featured on the mission’s website in honor of this year’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
According to the EU Mission, Loizidou contributes to marine litter prevention efforts as part of the SeaClear2.0 project, which focuses on reducing marine pollution in the Mediterranean Basin.
"Dr. Loizidou has worked as an international expert and researcher in coastal erosion management, as well as in sustainable development policies and strategies," the EU Mission stated.

Emphasizing the importance of diversity in science, Loizidou noted that biodiversity is essential for the sustainable functioning of natural systems, just as diversity is crucial for the sustainability of science.
“The participation of women in science must be supported and ensured. It is a necessary condition for a healthy scientific community and sustainable scientific progress,” she stressed.
“We, women scientists, are capable, strong, and achieve our goals in all fields of hard science,” Loizidou told the Cyprus News Agency. She cited her recent involvement in the SeaClear2.0 project, which is developing an autonomous robotic system powered by artificial intelligence tools to detect and remove marine litter.
Loizidou’s Cypriot research team at Isotech plays a key role in the project, with three female scientists leading policy actions and intervention implementation across the Mediterranean.
Speaking to CNA, Loizidou expressed her surprise at being recognized by the EU Mission, calling it a meaningful acknowledgment of her work. "The sea is my greatest passion, and I am truly honored that my dedication is being recognized," she concluded.
