TasteAtlas: Cyprus’ Best Dishes Ranked

Explore Cyprus’ best-rated traditional foods and culinary heritage.

A month ago, we reported on the so-called “worst Cypriot dish”, as ranked by the international food platform TasteAtlas. The traditional dessert Siamishi, made with semolina and commonly associated with festive celebrations, landed in last place. But how is the "worst" dish determined? And if Siamishi is considered an “unsuccessful” dish, which Cypriot food wins over everyone's hearts?

TasteAtlas, a global platform mapping flavors and culinary traditions, conducts annual polls in which food enthusiasts from around the world vote. The rankings are influenced by personal taste preferences, cultural experiences, and the international popularity of each dish.

While Siamishi struggles with its reputation, the iconic Kleftiko sits proudly at the top of the rankings. This slow-roasted lamb dish, loved by locals and visitors alike, carries a name rooted in history. The term "Kleftiko" comes from the klephts, who would steal lambs, cook them, and then bury the meat underground to hide the aroma of roasting. They would dig a pit, light a fire, wrap the meat, and leave it in the embers for hours until perfectly cooked.
