Limassol Explores Tram System to Tackle Traffic Congestion

Experts to Discuss Urban Transport Solutions at March 18 Conference

A conference on March 18 will explore the potential development of a tram system as a solution to Limassol’s growing urban traffic congestion, according to Mayor Yiannis Armeftis.

During a visit by French Ambassador Clelia Chevrier Kolacko, Armeftis stated that Limassol is looking at the tram network in Marseille, a twin city of Limassol, as a possible model.

"It is worth examining this possibility at this stage, which is why we want to bring the example of Marseille and two other French cities to the discussion," he said. He added that the conference will host experts specializing in both the technical and financial aspects of such a project, with Ambassador Kolacko also expected to attend.

The mayor emphasized that for large-scale projects like a tram system, sustainability is key. He pointed out that beyond improving public transport, such an initiative could bring broader urban regeneration benefits, enhancing public spaces and city infrastructure.

Armeftis highlighted the severity of Limassol’s traffic issues, noting that 90% of residents still rely on private vehicles. Without alternative transportation solutions, he warned, congestion will continue to cause delays and financial costs for the city's residents.

The conference will take place on March 18 at the Panos Solomonides Municipal Cultural Center.
