Niki Charalambous: Championing Cypriot Fashion at the Cyprus Diaspora Forum®
Niki Charalambous, Founder and CEO of JustNiki, has long been the driving force behind the fashion programming at the Cyprus Diaspora Forum®, overseeing runway presentations, cultural initiatives, and designer showcases that celebrate Cypriot creativity. A fashion journalist, stylist, and advocate, Niki has consistently placed Cypriot and Greek designers at the forefront, promoting their work both locally and internationally through her editorial and promotional activities.
This year's Cyprus Diaspora Forum® featured a fashion show by trailblazing Cypriot sustainable textile designer Michalis Pantelidis. Known for working at the intersection of fashion, art, and cultural storytelling, Michalis focuses on silk accessories that translate heritage, memory, and everyday observations into wearable works of art.
“Michalis has been an integral part of the Cyprus Diaspora Forum® since its inception three years ago, and it was only a matter of time before he showcased his work through a dedicated fashion show at the Forum,” Niki said.
“We continue to include culture, the arts, and fashion as part of the Forum’s woven tapestry, paying tribute to the rich heritage that defines Cyprus and its people. Even within a business-focused event, cultural heritage is essential. It provides context, identity, and meaning to our discussions, reminding us that innovation and enterprise flourish best when rooted in shared values and traditions. Culture connects communities, inspires creativity, and shapes the way Cyprus is seen on the global stage.”
This year’s programme reflected that philosophy. Alongside discussions on investment, entrepreneurship, and global collaboration, the Forum celebrated the creative and cultural forces that have shaped Cyprus throughout the centuries. From artistic expression and heritage to contemporary fashion and design, these elements highlighted the depth and diversity of Cyprus’ cultural landscape.
“Our goal is to create a space where business, creativity, and heritage intersect—where entrepreneurs, innovators, artists, and cultural ambassadors can engage in dialogue about Cyprus’ future while honouring the traditions that have shaped its past. The diaspora has long preserved and promoted this identity abroad, carrying not only professional expertise but also language, customs, art, and cultural pride wherever Cypriots have settled.”
The CYDIA Awards® also provided an opportunity for Niki to showcase one of Cyprus’ most iconic cultural traditions within the ceremony. Together with renowned choreographer Antigoni Tasouri, they worked to incorporate traditional Lefkaritika embroidery into the opening performance.
What began as a concept on paper was transformed into a breathtaking tribute to the island’s cultural heritage and identity, captivating audiences and setting the tone for the evening.
“It was truly an exceptional cultural masterpiece that Antigoni and her team of professional dancers brought to life,” Niki said. “The performance was so powerful that even Angela Gerekou, Greece’s former Deputy Minister of Culture, praised the visual spectacle and expressed interest in showcasing it in Greece.”
Niki has also collaborated with other acclaimed Cypriot designers, including Menelaos Theodosiades, who for the past three years has styled and dressed the Forum’s hosts, presenters, and attendees. Through his visionary label, TheoM, Menelaos has carved out a distinctive path within the fashion industry, earning accolades and recognition for his innovative designs.
“From sleek, tailored suits to ethereal evening gowns, each piece bears the mark of his creative vision and meticulous attention to detail,” Niki said.
The Cyprus Diaspora Forum® has also provided a platform for designers Andreas Zannetides and Cyprus-based Ukrainian designer Vitaly Tabakov, both of whom have contributed to the Forum’s evolving fashion landscape. The Forum has further supported initiatives such as the Fashion Heritage Network Cyprus, founded by Christina Dymioti, Andreani Panayide, founder of Folkmona, a Cypriot heritage fashion brand celebrating traditional textiles and sustainable craftsmanship, and renowned fashion designer and lecturer Panteli Pantelis. Christina Dymioti, Andreani Panayide and Panteli Pantelis have also been active participants in the Cyprus Diaspora Forum, contributing to panel discussions and sharing their expertise with the Forum's international audience.
“I enjoy promoting designers who reinterpret traditional techniques through contemporary fashion, preserving our heritage while introducing it to a global audience,” Niki said. “For me, it's about creating a meaningful dialogue between the past and the present.”
Niki’s influence extends through her journalism and promotional work, helping Cypriot and Greek designers gain the visibility and recognition they deserve. She has played a pivotal role in ensuring that fashion remains an integral part of the Forum, providing a platform where creativity, culture, and heritage converge.
“The presence of cultural ambassadors alongside business leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs ensures that the Cyprus Diaspora Forum® is not only a strategic and forward-looking event, but one that remains deeply rooted in the values, traditions, and identity that make Cyprus unique.”
With preparations for the Cyprus Diaspora Forum® 2027 already underway, the vision is clear: to continue elevating the experience year after year. Much like the world of fashion—where creativity evolves, craftsmanship is refined, and every new collection sets a higher benchmark—the Forum is committed to pushing boundaries, celebrating excellence, and creating an even more inspiring platform for the global Cypriot community.
