Peter G. Economides: 'Cyprus Lacked Global-Standard Infrastructure — We Set Out to Change That'
Founder, Chairman and CEO of CL8 on the evolution of Cyprus’s digital infrastructure, the future of cloud and emerging technologies, and why trust and adaptability matter most in business.
When Peter G. Economides founded CL8, Cyprus lacked a modern data infrastructure that could meet global standards. Businesses often had little choice but to host their data abroad, at greater cost and complexity. Today, CL8 has grown into a trusted hub for cloud and hosting services, helping position Cyprus as a competitive player in the digital economy.
With more than five decades of international business experience, Mr. Economides brings a perspective that blends global strategy with local realities. From the rise of AI and edge computing to Europe’s focus on data sovereignty, he argues that trust, resilience, and adaptability matter more than ever. In this interview, he reflects on the lessons of building CL8, the role of infrastructure in shaping Cyprus’s future, and why commitment and integrity remain the true foundations of long-lasting businesses.
When we started CL8, Cyprus lacked infrastructure that met international standards. Companies often had to host data inhouse abroad, which was costly and inconvenient. Our aim was to change that by creating a facility on par with those in larger markets. Over time, the vision expanded. It’s no longer just about certification or uptime, it’s about giving businesses efficiency, flexibility, compliance, and a sense of security that allows them to grow here while staying connected globally.
Clients want simplicity. Instead of juggling several vendors, they prefer one partner for cloud, colocation, and security. Because we work internationally, we understand different regulations and expectations, but we also stay close enough to offer personal support.
Global players bring scale but feel distant; local firms are close but lack depth. CL8 combines both
Global players bring scale but can feel distant. Local firms are accessible but may lack depth. CL8 combines the two, global standards with local responsiveness.
It means listening and adapting. Some clients need hybrid setups, others strict data residency, others extra security layers. Instead of forcing them into one model, we build around their needs. And because they deal with the same team every time, they know they will get a practical, human response. That’s what makes “Our Cloud, Your Way” real, it’s secure, fast, and built around the client, not the other way round.
AI is the immediate driver, reshaping security, efficiency, and processing power. Edge computing will matter more as industries need real-time data near the source. Add IoT with billions of connected devices, and demand for secure, low-latency infrastructure only grows.
AI is the immediate driver, but edge computing and IoT will define the next wave of demand
The technology will keep evolving, but what clients need most is trust, knowing their provider can keep infrastructure resilient, compliant, and ready for the next wave of change.
Being in Cyprus, we’re fully compliant with EU law, which reassures European clients on GDPR and data sovereignty. Their data stays inside the EU, handled to the highest standards. For clients in the Middle East and beyond, we offer something else, a gateway into Europe’s regulatory framework with proximity and flexibility. Because we’re carrier-neutral, clients are not locked into one provider. In both cases, they get security, compliance, and choice.
Cyprus is building a stronger digital economy, but that can only happen on solid infrastructure. Our role is to provide that backbone, secure, compliant, and internationally credible. By doing so, we help local start-ups, research projects, and international firms invest with confidence. In this way, CL8 is more than a provider. We are part of making Cyprus a competitive digital hub that can connect easily to global markets.
The lesson is simple, stay relevant. Markets, regulations, and technology all change, but if you listen to clients and adapt honestly, you will endure. Chasing short-term wins can lead to failure, but building trust and credibility creates lasting strength.
Markets and technology change, but commitment and integrity remain the real foundations of success
I have seen that the businesses that last are those that focus on relationships and resilience. Technology will keep evolving, but commitment and integrity remain the real foundations of success.
