Inside ESG: How Governance Shapes Resilient and Responsible Businesses
The final episode of Inside ESG explores the crucial role of corporate governance in sustainable development, featuring insights from leading industry experts.
Inside ESG concludes its first season—two years after its launch—with a powerful episode dedicated to corporate governance, the "G" in ESG.
In this sixth and final episode of the first season, Inside ESG, hosted by Irini Loucaides, sheds light on the pivotal role of corporate governance in driving sustainable growth. Loucaides, Managing Director of Grow Sustainability Consulting, welcomes two distinguished guests: Kalia Larkou, an ESG and corporate governance consultant with international experience, and Dr. Adonis Pegasiou, Academic Director at the European Institute of Management and Finance (EIMF). Their conversation centers on how responsible governance forms the foundation for sustainable development.
Kalia Larkou emphasized that corporate governance defines a company’s values and strategy. She highlighted its function as a key driver for long-term value creation—not just for shareholders, but for society and the environment as a whole. Larkou also stressed the need for leaders with a "sustainable mindset," capable of embedding ESG principles across all aspects of their strategic planning.
Dr. Adonis Pegasiou pointed out that without good governance, there can be neither growth nor sustainability. He explained that governance provides the framework for accountability, transparency, and internal controls, safeguarding organizations against risks and mismanagement. He also underscored the importance of board diversity and the alignment of executive compensation with ESG objectives.
The episode also delved into the unique challenges faced by businesses in Cyprus as they strive to align with new regulatory frameworks and adopt a sustainability-driven culture. Both speakers agreed on the importance of continuous education and performance evaluation for boards and management. Only through this ongoing effort can sustainable development evolve from a theoretical concept into a tangible business practice.
