Christodoulides and Tatar to Discuss Opening New Crossing Points
Meeting Follows UN-Facilitated Discussions on Enhancing Mobility Between Communities
On Monday at 10:30 AM, President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar will meet at the residence of UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative Colin Stewart at Nicosia Airport. The discussion will focus on opening new crossing points, following agreements made during an informal dinner hosted by the UN Secretary-General on October 15, 2024, in New York.
The Greek Cypriot side has long submitted proposals for opening crossings at Pyroi and Kokkina during meetings between the negotiators of both sides and Colin Stewart. Meanwhile, the Turkish Cypriot side has expressed interest in establishing a crossing point at Mia Milia.
In his recent report to the UN Security Council regarding the renewal of UNFICYP’s mandate, UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the commitment of the two leaders to explore the possibility of opening new crossing points.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency on Sunday, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasized the Greek Cypriot side’s willingness to approach the meeting with a constructive attitude. “We are attending with full resolve and a constructive stance to achieve progress,” he said, adding that thorough preparations with specific proposals and positions had been made.
On Saturday, a demonstration was held in Pachyammos, with residents calling for a crossing at Kokkina. Similarly, on Friday, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot organizations held a joint event at the Ayios Dhometios checkpoint, advocating for the opening of additional crossing points.
