The Cyprus Environmental Organizations Federation (OPOK) has expressed its regret over how the recent parliamentary session on the devastating Limassol wildfires unfolded. At the same time, the Federation urged both Parliament and the Government to ensure transparency and accountability regarding the causes and responsibilities of the disaster.

According to OPOK’s press release, expectations for clear answers and meaningful dialogue were not met. Relevant state authorities failed to provide sufficient input, while valuable time was consumed by side discussions that prevented an in-depth investigation.

As a result, environmental organizations were not given the opportunity to contribute. OPOK stressed that their documented proposals and expertise could have added significant value to the process.

The Federation expressed hope that in upcoming sessions all stakeholders will be heard. A more comprehensive and constructive exchange of views is essential, OPOK noted, to achieve better prevention strategies and effective crisis management in the future.

OPOK is calling on Parliament and the Government to:

• Guarantee transparency and accountability for the causes and responsibilities of the Limassol wildfires.

• Strengthen the institutional role of environmental organizations in decision-making processes.

• Adopt prevention and crisis management policies based on scientific knowledge and international best practices.
