A legislative initiative to permanently lift the arms embargo on Cyprus has been introduced by leading members of the Hellenic Caucus in the U.S. Congress.

The initiative seeks to eliminate restrictions and exclusions related to the provision of military assistance and the sale of defense equipment to the Republic of Cyprus.

While the United States has already lifted the embargo in full, the current framework requires annual renewal, complicating long-term defense planning.

This legislative effort aims to enable Cyprus to acquire American-made defense systems, paving the way for stronger defense ties between Washington and Nicosia. The move is expected to enhance Cyprus's ability to plan and implement more strategic, long-term defense initiatives.
