Cyprus Sees 20% Drop in Building Permits in February 2025
Major decline in permit numbers offset by increases in project value, area, and residential unit construction amid transition to new licensing system.
A significant decrease of 20.4% was recorded in the number of building permits issued in February 2025, with approvals falling to 562 compared to 706 in February 2024, according to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus.
Despite the sharp decline in permit numbers, the total value of these permits reached €296.3 million, while the total construction area amounted to 237,200 square meters. These permits are expected to lead to the construction of 1,094 residential units.
In the broader period of January–February 2025, the number of building permits issued dropped by 22.0% to 1,008 from 1,293 in the same period of 2024. However, the total value of these permits rose by 12.1%, and the overall construction area increased by 6.6%. Notably, the number of residential units showed a 10.2% increase.
The Statistical Service notes that, as of July 1, 2024, the responsibility for issuing building permits has shifted from municipal and district authorities to the newly established District Local Government Organizations (EOA). Licensing procedures are now carried out through the new integrated digital platform "Ippodamos."
