Larnaca to Invest €18M in Sustainable Urban Mobility Projects

Contracts Ready by January 2025 for New Bus Lanes, Smart Lights, and Infrastructure

Larnaca will invest €18 million in bus lanes, smart lights, and other infrastructure, with contracts ready by January 2025. These projects are part of the Larnaca Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) and are funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan, with additional funding from the State Budget. The application deadline for the tender process ended on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.

The project includes:

  • Reconstruction of road surface layers and creation of bus lanes and bus stop infrastructure

  • Construction of bike lanes and cycling infrastructure

  • Creation of roadside parking spaces

  • Construction and reconstruction of sidewalks

  • Construction of traffic light-controlled crossings for pedestrians and cyclists (Pelican and Zebra types)

  • Installation of new and/or upgrading of existing traffic lights

  • Horizontal and vertical signage

  • Accompanying infrastructure drainage for green spaces

  • Road lighting, sewerage, stormwater, water supply, and irrigation network infrastructure

Brief contacted Evi Anagiotou, Head of the Sustainable Mobility Branch at the Department of Public Works, regarding the process and start date of the projects, as well as the estimated cost funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan and the State Budget.

According to Ms. Anagiotou, if no negative developments occur, the project contract will be ready by December 2024 or January 2025.

Funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund amounts to €11 million, with the remainder covered by the State Budget.

All the Details

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, Department of Public Works, announced on June 28, 2024, the call for tenders for the "Larnaca Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan Priority Projects: Implementation of Bus Lanes and Bike Paths" with Tender Number KPS/13/2024/E(A).

According to the Ministry of Transport, the project aims to promote public transportation and multimodality in the transportation network connecting the local cores of the municipalities in Larnaca. This will be achieved by reshaping the main axes, in line with the priorities of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.

The project includes the reconstruction of the road surface layers, the creation of bus lanes and bus stop infrastructure, the construction of bike lanes and cycling infrastructure, the creation of roadside parking spaces, the construction and reconstruction of sidewalks, the construction of traffic light-controlled crossings for pedestrians and cyclists (Pelican and Zebra types), the installation of new and/or upgrading of existing traffic lights, horizontal and vertical signage, and accompanying infrastructure drainage for green spaces, road lighting, sewerage, stormwater, water supply, and irrigation network infrastructure.

According to the Ministry, the contract is being promoted under the Recovery and Resilience Plan of Cyprus / INTERVENTION CODE: C2.2I1 / INTERVENTION TITLE: Implementation of Sustainable Urban Mobility Projects (SUMP) and accessibility-enhancing measures.

The estimated value of the project is €18,750,000, excluding VAT, with a completion period of sixteen (16) months from the start date of the project.
