Larnaca Recognized as "Green City" of Cyprus for 2023

Larnaca's strategic initiatives in green development and inclusive urban planning

In a significant development for urban sustainability and green innovation, Larnaca has been distinguished as the "Green City'' of Cyprus for the year 2023. This prestigious accolade, as announced by the city's municipality, marks Larnaca's entry into the Cyprus Center for Environmental Research and Education's (CYCERE) esteemed Network of Green Cities & Communities.

This recognition is particularly notable for Larnaca's strategic urban redevelopment initiatives. The city has been commended for two key projects that embody its commitment to integrating cultural heritage with environmental consciousness. The first, "Redevelopment of the courtyard and restoration of part of the Zouchuri building complex," won acclaim in the "Culture and Environment" category.

This project demonstrates Larnaca's dedication to preserving its cultural legacy while embracing sustainable practices. The second project, "Redevelopment of Streets and Facilities for the Disabled in the Center of Larnaca," secured recognition in the "Sustainable Traffic and Transportation" category, highlighting the city's forward-thinking approach to inclusive and eco-friendly urban mobility.

These projects not only represent Larnaca's commitment to sustainable urban development but also position the city as a leader in green innovation, potentially attracting interest from global environmental initiatives and eco-conscious investors.

The formal presentation of the Green Flags — a symbol of this prestigious recognition — is scheduled to take place in an official ceremony on January 31, 2024, at the Presidential Palace. This event, set to be presided over by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, is expected to draw attention from various sectors, including environmental advocacy, urban planning, and the broader business community.

It will serve as a platform to showcase Larnaca's achievements and its potential as a model for sustainable urban development in Cyprus and beyond.
