The Municipality of Lakatamia will soon announce a tender for the construction of the Lakatamia Environmental Centre, valued at €3.000.000, which is included in the initiatives for Pedieos River, within the framework of Nicosia’s Overall Spatial Development Strategy, whose funding was approved by the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ European Fund Unit.

The Environmental Centre will have a presentation room, exhibition spaces and offices. It will be staffed with suitable individuals, under the auspices of the Municipality of Lakatamia, who will be educated about the environmental strategy of Pedieos River. The training will include, among others, presentations and conferences directed to both students and adults, as well as exhibits relevant to Pedieos’s River biodiversity.

The transit in ecotourism paths that will connect the flora and fauna habitats at its bed, will be created under the Environmental Centre’s care, in collaboration with environmental agencies and academic foundations. Events and festivals about the environment, ecology and Pedios River will be held there.

The Overall Spatial Development Strategy (OXA) 2021-2030 which was submitted by the Municipalities of Nicosia’s Urban Region, was honourably placed first with an amount of €31 million.

During their meeting on Thursday, March 31, 2022, the mayor of Nicosia, Konstantinos Yorkatzis, the mayor of Strovolos, Andreas Papacharalambous, the mayor of Lakatamia, Fotoula Chatzipapa, the mayor of Aglantzia, Andreas Konstantinou, the mayor of Egkomi, Zacharias Kyriakou, and the mayor of St. Dometios, Kostas Petrou, agreed that this success is a product of their exceptional collaboration. They also expressed their satisfaction and congratulated their teams for their contribution to the Strategy’s configuration.
