CSEO and CMMI Sign Pact to Use Space Tech for Marine Protection

A Collaboration to Harness Space and Marine Technologies for Environmental Safeguarding

The Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO) and the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement, formalized on Thursday, focuses on utilizing space technologies to safeguard the marine environment.

This collaboration marks the first time two Cypriot research organizations have united for such an ambitious and visionary purpose. George Danos, President of CSEO, and Zacharias Siokouros, CEO of CMMI, aim to develop and employ space and marine technologies for research and joint initiatives in the blue economy sector.

"The ultimate objective is to protect our immediate environment, establish best practices, and promote sustainable development – goals with the potential for global application," states the press release.

Siokouros, in his address, underscored the significance of this collaboration in leveraging technology and local scientific expertise to protect our planet. He emphasized the key role of the infrastructures being developed by both organizations, which will be made available to the entire Research and Innovation ecosystem in Cyprus, as well as to the broader region and Europe.

Danos addressed a common misconception, clarifying that space technologies extend beyond mere outer space exploration. He emphasized that this partnership will showcase their vital role in planetary protection. "The Memorandum of Understanding with CMMI enables us to cultivate space technologies within our nation and apply them to safeguard the environment of both Cyprus and our larger home, Earth," he remarked.

The signing ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Nicosia Mayor Constantinos Giorkadjis, Larnaka Vice Mayor Iasonas Iasonides, and Ioannis Tipaldos, Director of the Department of Integrated Marine Ecosystem of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping.

Following the ceremony, teams from both organizations convened to mark the immediate commencement of their joint efforts.
