Cabinet Approves Purchase of 100,000 Electronic IDs

President Highlights Key Step Towards Digital Transformation and Enhanced Security.

The Cabinet, which is set to meet today at 11:00 AM, will approve the purchase of 100,000 electronic IDs, according to the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, speaking at the Digital Agenda Cyprus Summit, taking place at the Municipal Theater of Nicosia.

As the President stated, "We will approve incentives for electronic IDs in the Cabinet meeting at 11:00 AM, including digital signatures to enhance the efficiency, security, and speed of transactions, ensuring that government services are provided seamlessly and securely."

Specifically, he continued, "Today, the Cabinet is expected to make this very important decision regarding electronic IDs, approving the purchase of one hundred thousand electronic IDs over a period of three years and making them available for use by citizens of the Republic over 18 years old."

This decision, President Christodoulides emphasized, "will significantly contribute to our efforts for the gradual digital transition of the state."

He explained that "the ID to be announced today will have a validity of 3 years with the option for renewal, allowing among other things, fast electronic identification for access to information systems with a high level of security, recognized at the European level for cross-border transactions."

Thus, the President of the Republic stressed, "if used simultaneously for the electronic signing of documents, it will have the same legal validity as a handwritten signature and can be utilized in all electronic transactions that currently require a handwritten signature to be completed."

In conclusion, the President expressed his confidence that everyone understands the benefits for the public, citizens, and the private sector through this initiative, as well as his belief that it provides a substantial boost to the development of fully digital services.
