Greece and Cyprus Deepen Collaboration in Digital Transformation

Memorandum of Cooperation Signed to Enhance Public Service Efficiency

The deepening of Greece and Cyprus's cooperation in digital transformation was the focus of an official meeting between Cyprus's Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy, Nikodimos Damianou, and Greece's Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation.

The meeting took place at the Ministry of Digital Governance in Athens, following the Greek Minister’s visit to Cyprus last November.

According to the joint statement from the two Ministries, "a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed with the goal of implementing an action plan to significantly improve the operation of their public services."

The memorandum focuses on the exchange of best practices and experiences, as well as the provision of expertise for the development of applications and electronic services to better serve citizens.

The cooperation begins with the launch of the "Digital Citizen" (Gov.cy Digital Citizen) application in Cyprus, based on the Gov.gr Wallet application already implemented by Greece's Ministry of Digital Governance.

The ultimate aim of the Memorandum of Cooperation is the mutual recognition of digital documents, facilitating the movement of citizens between the two countries using the applications for identification, and simplifying citizen transactions with the state using digital documents issued by one country’s electronic application recognized by the other.

During the meeting, the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy thanked his Greek counterpart for the hospitality and expressed his satisfaction with the deepening cooperation with Greece on digital transformation issues.

In this context, he stated that the first step in this modernization for Cyprus is "the implementation of the Digital Citizen application—an initiative announced by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides—based on the Gov.gr Wallet."

On his part, the Greek Minister of Digital Governance expressed his pleasure at meeting his Cypriot counterpart and expanding the cooperation between the two countries.

"Our goal is common: to leverage technology for the benefit of our citizens," Mr. Papastergiou noted, emphasizing the importance of exchanging expertise with Cyprus at this level.
