Winners of 7th Robotex Cyprus and 1st MRC Sports Robotics Competition Honored at Award Ceremony
Robotex and MRC Champions to Represent Cyprus at International Competitions
The winners of the 7th Cyprus Robotics Competition, Robotex, and the 1st Minoan RobotSports Competition (MRC), which took place in June under the patronage of the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, were honored in an award ceremony organized by the Cyprus Computer Society (CCS) on October 9.
According to the event’s announcement, the stars of the ceremony were the 190 young and adult robotics enthusiasts, students, and professionals who distinguished themselves in the final stage of the competition, excelling in over 25 different challenges.
Many of the awarded robotics teams will travel to Estonia in December to represent Cyprus at Robotex International, where Cyprus has consistently excelled in recent years. Additionally, the winners of the MRC challenges will, for the first time, have the opportunity to participate under the Cypriot flag at the MRC Global Olympiad, scheduled for April in Crete.
More than 400 attendees had the opportunity to take photos at the Interactive Photobooth and participate in a Rubik’s Cube solving competition. Guests also experienced virtual and augmented reality glasses featuring content from the CybARbverse project, which was introduced at the beginning of the event.
The announcement of the winner was made by Elli Ioannidou, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at the Bank of Cyprus, and George Kousis, Executive Director of Technology and Operational Activities, who handed out the awards.
The event was addressed by Demetris Skourides, Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation, and Technology, with a speech delivered by Costas Christofides, a member of the Board of Directors of the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), a diamond sponsor of the Robotex MRC Cyprus 2024 competition.
Following the main awards, a special tribute was made to volunteers in memory of Andreas Antoniou, presented by CCS President Kostas Agrotis. The awards went to young scientist Pantelis Katsis, computer science student Niki Hatzigeorgiou, and secondary education teachers George Vasileiou and Christos Kyprianou.
Finally, it was announced that until the next Robotex MRC Cyprus, scheduled for the last weekend of June 2025, the Cyprus Computer Society will continue to organize school-year competitions such as the Bebras Algorithmic Thinking competition for primary and secondary schools, the Informatics Olympiad for secondary education, and the First Lego League robotics event in March 2025.
