Successful Completion of the Conference “Hydrogen for a Clean Future: Pathways for Cyprus & Beyond”
The conference “Hydrogen for a Clean Future: Pathways for Cyprus & Beyond”, organised by the Cyprus Hydrogen Association and the Cyprus Federation of Employers & Industrialists (OEB), was successfully held on 14 November 2025 at Frederick University in Nicosia. The presence of a high-level and diverse audience highlighted the growing interest in the role of hydrogen in Cyprus' energy future.
The event was opened with welcome remarks by Mr. Makis Ketonis, President of the Cyprus Hydrogen Association, Professor George Demosthenous, Rector of Frederick University, Mr. Giorgos Papanastasiou, Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, and Dr. Kyriakos Hadjiyiannis, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism.
This was followed by presentations and interventions from leading European and Cypriot experts who contributed decisively to shaping a comprehensive framework for the future of the hydrogen economy. Mr. Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe, highlighted the strategic role of hydrogen in Europe’s energy transition and the opportunities it presents for countries like Cyprus.
Professor Andreas Poullikkas, Professor of Energy Systems at Frederick University, presented key findings from recent studies on the potential role of hydrogen in the Cypriot energy system, outlining both the technical possibilities and the challenges to be addressed for its smooth and effective integration.
Equally important was the contribution of Professor Pericles Pilidis from Cranfield University (UK) and Dr. Nikolaos Lymperopoulos, former Executive Board Member of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, who shared their long-standing expertise on hydrogen technologies and funding mechanisms. Technical and business-oriented aspects were also presented by Mr. Konstantinos Chatzifotis of Motor Oil Hellas Group, with a focus on the Greek Hydrogen Valley TRIĒRĒS. In the same spirit, Mr. Jens Wulff, CEO of Neuman & Esser, and Mr. Paul McCormack, CEO of Hydrogen Ireland, contributed valuable European experience in infrastructure and technology development.
Within the framework of the discussion, a particularly ambitious initiative was also presented: the creation of a joint programme between the Cyprus Hydrogen Association and Hydrogen Ireland, with the aim of submitting a joint proposal to the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the promotion and strengthening of green hydrogen at the European level.
The conference brought together more than 100 participants, creating a vibrant environment for knowledge exchange, networking, and meaningful dialogue around the technological, institutional, and developmental prospects of hydrogen.
The active participation of representatives from ministries, parliamentary institutions, universities, embassies, businesses, and financial organisations further underscored the significance of the event.
Following the completion of the conference, all presentations have been published on the event’s official website.
The organisers express their warmest thanks to all participants, speakers, and supporters whose contributions were instrumental in fostering a productive and meaningful discussion on the future of hydrogen in Cyprus and the wider region.
