These scientists have developed materials that safely convert near-infrared light into heat. This novel branch of cancer treatment method is called photothermal therapy, and it is a non-invasive procedure that targets cancer cells through extreme heat. By inserting materials that absorb light into the cancer cells, and then targeted with light, the treatment enables said materials to generate the heat necessary to eliminate the cancer cells, leaving healthy ones completely unaffected.

The goal of this new technique is to combat the established shortcomings of the more traditional methods of cancer treatment. From the extreme side effects and hardship experienced by the patient to the very high financial costs, this photothermal process aims to bring new hope to patients worldwide and to begin a new, more optimistic chapter in mankind’s struggle with cancer.

How Realistic and Sustainable Is this Treatment?

As we’ve already mentioned, cancer treatment procedures are usually rather expensive, making them hardly approachable for the average person. This technique aims to revolutionize not only the medical and technical circumstances of requiring cancer treatment, but the financial and societal ones as well.

The NIR-LEDs used for the implementation of this treatment do not require many resources in order to be properly studied and developed. According to the team behind its creation, the whole equipment required for the process costs a measly $530, making it a more affordable option for researchers, scientists, and cancer patients.

This minimal need for investment makes the therapy’s research much easier to conduct, allowing the therapy ample time and resources to be perfected. In a world where costs are rising rapidly everywhere, creating such an impressive alternative for cancer treatment for such a low cost is nothing short of a miracle.

How Effective Is Photothermal Therapy?

Despite it still being in an experimental stage, the therapy has been recording some quite impressive numbers that give major hope for its successful and effective employment in the near future.

According to a study published by the University of Texas, the photothermal therapy eliminated up to 92% of skin cancer cells and up to 50% of colorectal cancer cells in only 30 minutes of exposure. To further underline the safety of this treatment, this was achieved without causing any harm to healthy tissue whatsoever.

Naturally, many more studies and experiments will need to be conducted before the treatment becomes widely accepted as a viable option for cancer treatment, but the foundations have already been laid.

What This Means for the Future of Cancer Therapies

While, unfortunately, we are still far away from the cancer-free future we all wish for, this is certainly another step in the right direction. The development of innovative equipment, treatment methods and the deeper understanding we gain with each new breakthrough, allow us to remain cautiously optimistic about the future and what it has in store.
