IMEC in the Spotlight During Modi’s Cyprus Visit

First Indian Prime Minister to Visit Cyprus in 23 Years

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay an official two-day visit to Cyprus on June 15–16, following an invitation from President Nikos Christodoulides. It will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the island in 23 years.

The visit unfolds in the shadow of a national tragedy. On Thursday, an Air India flight with 242 people on board crashed in a densely populated area of Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff, leaving no known survivors.

President Christodoulides will welcome PM Modi upon his arrival at Larnaca’s Glafcos Clerides International Airport on June 15. The two leaders will then travel to Limassol to attend a roundtable with business leaders from both countries, followed by an informal working dinner.

On June 16, Modi will be officially received at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, where he will hold a private meeting with Christodoulides and be awarded the Grand Collar of the Order of Makarios III.

Extended talks between the two delegations will follow, with discussions expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations in areas such as trade, economy, infrastructure, and investment. Key geopolitical issues—including EU–India relations, the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), regional developments in the Middle East and South Asia, and the Cyprus problem—will also be addressed.

Later, the leaders will visit the Nicosia Town Hall and walk along the UN buffer zone. President Christodoulides will then host an official luncheon in Modi’s honor at the Presidential Palace, before the Indian leader departs Cyprus.
