Chevron–Christodoulides Talks Described as Positive by Presidency
Government stresses strict timelines and close cooperation with Chevron in the Cypriot EEZ.
Chevron’s presence in Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) was hailed as a strong vote of confidence in the country’s energy prospects during President Nikos Christodoulides’s meeting with the company’s newly appointed BAEC President, Javier La Rosa, in New York.
Christodoulides congratulated La Rosa on his new role and underlined the importance of Chevron’s ongoing activity in the Cypriot EEZ, calling it a sign of trust not only in Cyprus but also in the wider region. He highlighted the recently signed agreement with Egypt as a “landmark deal,” stressing that time is of the essence for Cyprus and that agreed steps must be implemented without delay.
Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, speaking after the meeting, emphasized that strict adherence to energy development timelines remains a top government priority. He confirmed that all milestones are being met so far, noting that offshore geotechnical and geological surveys for the subsea installations and the planned pipeline route to Egypt began in June. By the end of this year, the ‘prefit’ phase is expected to be completed, paving the way for the next stages of development at the Aphrodite gas field.
Letymbiotis added that the President and Chevron agreed to maintain close and regular contact with both the relevant ministry and Christodoulides personally, underlining the urgency of moving forward. He also framed Chevron’s long-term presence in Cyprus’s EEZ as sending clear geopolitical signals, particularly amid shifting regional dynamics.
“The collaboration with Chevron represents a decisive vote of confidence in Cyprus’s natural gas potential, the first to be discovered in our EEZ, and in the geopolitical importance of our energy resources,” Letymbiotis said. He stressed that the government’s ultimate goal is to see Cyprus’s natural wealth developed as quickly as possible, with direct benefits for Cypriot consumers and the wider economy.
