Under the Microscope of the CPC Is Elon Musk's SpaceX, Over the Acquisition of the Company Anysphere, Inc.
Under the microscope of Cyprus' Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC) is Space Exploration Technologies Corp., widely known as SpaceX, which was founded by Elon Musk, regarding the acquisition of Anysphere, Inc.
Specifically, the CPC announced that it received notification of a concentration regarding the acquisition of control over Anysphere, Inc. by SpaceX, based on the provisions of Article 10(4) of the Control of Concentrations Between Undertakings Law of 2014.
It is noted that under current legislation, companies, and particularly large ones, are legally obligated to inform competent authorities before completing merger or company acquisition agreements, with the purpose of scrutiny to ensure it will not create a monopoly and will not harm competition or consumers.
In its announcement, the CPC explains that Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is a company founded in Delaware, which together with its subsidiaries designs, develops, and launches rockets and spacecraft, and operates a satellite system known as Starlink, which provides satellite communication services, including high-speed internet for business and home use.
It adds that this specific company, together with its subsidiaries, belongs to the SpaceX Group, while clarifying that this group also includes X.AI Corp – an artificial intelligence company, and X Corp. – the company that owns and operates the social media platform X.
On the other hand, it informs that Anysphere, Inc., a company founded in the USA, develops and operates Cursor, an artificial intelligence coding tool.
In particular, it informs that Cursor supports the entire software development lifecycle, including design, coding, and code review.
It is worth mentioning that SpaceX is connected to Cyprus mainly through the Starlink satellite internet service, whose satellites often appear to the naked eye in the Cypriot sky.
Since 2023, the Starlink service began offering high-speed broadband internet in Cyprus, covering only the government-controlled areas of the island and providing solutions mainly to remote or rural areas.
Also, due to the strategic position of Cyprus, Starlink is widely used by vessels, marinas, and travelers in the region.
It is further worth noting that according to reports in the foreign press, the agreement for the acquisition of Anysphere, Inc. by Elon Musk's SpaceX closed at 60 billion dollars.
